This idea of autonomy works because of our hyperconnected state. Our collaboration is the highest in this state, and with being able to view what everyone does, it intrinsically encourages people to put out better work. It also allows for people to collaborate more, encourage others, contribute more and can succeed without any pay. I think we still need carrots and sticks, but we should for sure define what work needs what. It is a gray area, so teams of people motivated differently might just solve this. Companies like google (and alphabet) have already designated teams that work with intrinsic motivation.
Our schools can benefit from this fact about motivation by allowing students more electives, heck, even all electives! Whose to say that the "core subjects" we have now even benefit us? The majority of units and subjects and lessons don't even apply to real life. If we let the children find and focus themselves, this intrinsic motivation will move our next generation.
